Cunning-looking, dark-haired English character actor specialising in upper-class types who emigrated Down Under in the 1960s and played some distinctive cameos in Australian films during a long career. He was first seen in Spring-Heeled Jack (1950), a filmed version of a stage play based on the film The Curse of the Wraydons. Subsequent appearances in UK films included River Beat (1954), Sailor Beware (1956), Up the Creek (1958), Further Up the Creek (1958), Follow That Horse! (1960), The Green Helmet (1961) and Morgan - A Suitable Case for Treatment (1965). After establishing himself in Australia, he made Adam's Woman (1969), Between Wars (1973), Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), Mad Dog Morgan (1976), Magee and the Lady (1978), The Killing of Angel Street (1981), Fast Talking (1984), Burke & Wills (1985), Les Patterson Saves the World (1987), Outback (1989), Billy's Holiday (1995) and Moulin Rouge! (2001), his last.
