Skinny, short, bespectacled American character with high-pitched, rather adenoidal voice and a lick of dark hair, often seen as messengers and office boys, but also the voice of many cartoon characters, including cinema's Herman the Mouse and TV's Top Cat. Films included My Sister Eileen (1942, his first), They Got Me Covered (1943), So This is New York (1948), The Man with the Golden Arm (1955), The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (1962), It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (1963), Skidoo (1968), Ghost Dad (1990) and Dennis The Menace (1993), his last. Stang, who died from pneumonia, celebrated his diamond wedding in the year of his death.
