Paulette Dubost

Born - 8 October 1910, Paris, France
Died - 21 September 2011

Piquant, dark-haired, apple-cheeked French actress, often seen in 'below stairs' roles, most notably her flirtatious chambermaid in Jean Renoir's 1939 classic La Regle du Jeu. Born Paulette Deplanque, she gave up ballet studies, and made her film debut in La Bal (1931), becoming a stalwart of the French cinema for the next seven decades: Service de Nuit (1932), Paris Soleil (1933), Le Roi des Champs-Elysees (1934, with Buster Keaton), Hotel du Nord (1938), a rare leading role in Becassine (1940), Adrien (1943) and Roger la Honte (1946). Rejecting a post-war offer from 20th Century-Fox, she continued her career in France: Plume la Poule (1947), Four in a Jeep (1951), Le Plaisir (1952), Lola Montes (1955), The Diary of Major Thompson (1955), Maigret Sets a Trap (1958), Madchen in Uniform (1958), Le Dejeuner sur l'Herbe (1959), Maigret Voir Rouge (1963), Viva Maria! (1965), Juliette et Juliette (1974), Tendre Poulet (1978), The Last Metro (1980), La Vie Continue (1981), Cent Francs l'Amour (1986), Milou in May (1990), Le Roi de Paris (1995), Les Savates du Bon Dieu (2000), Les Yeux Clairs (2005) and the short Curriculum (2007), her last.
