Rotund, soft-voiced English supporting actor, usually the picture of beaming, bespectacled benevolence, sometimes pompous in period costume. From stage work in the early 1960s, he was in TV series from 1964, and films the following year, making his debut in a low-budget 'Edgar Wallace' thriller Game for Three Losers. He remained furiously busy on stage and in TV. Films were more sporadic, but they included Lock Up Your Daughters! (1969), The Pied Piper (1972), Royal Flash (1975), Queen Kong (1976), Morons from Outer Space (1985), Foreign Body (1986), Little Dorrit (1988), Madame Sousatzka (1988), The Fool (1990), Edward II (1991), Orlando (1992), As You Like It (1992), The Madness of King George (1994), Richard III (1995), Persuasion (1995), The Secret Agent (1996), The Tichbourne Claimant (1998), Up at the Villa (2000), Redemption Road (2001), Possession (2002), Around the World in 80 Days (2004), Keeping Mum (2005) and The King's Speech (2010), his last. He died from cancer.
