Warren Mitchell

Actor

Born - 14 January 1926, Hackney, London, England
Died - 14 November 2015

Prematurely balding, stocky, bristlingly moustachioed British actor who, once started in films in his late twenties, busily built up a formidable list of Jewish cockneys and other ethnic types, before creating a series of suburban monsters that culminated in the long-running, multi-prejudiced Alf Garnett of the TV series Till Death Us Do Part, a role that made him a national figure. Born Warren Misell, he changed his name in the early 1950s while working as a deejay. Films followed soon after: Five Days (1954), The Passing Stranger (1954), The Battle of the River Plate (1956), Manuela (1957), Barnacle Bill (1957), Girls at Sea (1958), Hell is a City (1959), Two-Way Stretch (1960), Village of Daughters (1961), We Joined the Navy (1962), Carry On Cleo (1964), The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965), Help! (1965), The Jokers (1966), Till Death Us Do Part (1968), All the Way Up (1969), The Alf Garnett Saga (1972), What Changed Charley Farthing? (1974), Jabberwocky (1977), Norman Loves Rose (1982), The Chain (1984), Foreign Body (1986), The Secret Policeman's Third Ball (1987), Kokoda Crescent (1988) and Family Crackers (1997). His last big-screen appearance was in the short The 10th Man in 2006, the year in which he suffered a stroke that precluded further appearances.
