Lanky, lugubrious, beaky English character actor whose main claim to fame lies in playing the nosey, officious inspector, Blakey, in the On the Buses TV series and subsequent spin-off films. He also wrote several episodes of the series, as well as the screenplay for the 1963 film Sparrows Can't Sing. He began life as a merchant seaman before joining the East London Theatre Workshop. TV appearances in the 1950s were followed by an entry into films: The Frightened City (1961), A Prize of Arms (1962), Sparrows Can't Sing (1963), Kaleidoscope (1966), Negatives (1968), Some Will, Some Won't (1970), On the Buses (1971), Holiday on the Buses (1973), The Last Remake of Beau Geste (1977), Adventures of a Plumber's Mate (1978), Personal Services (1987), The Krays (1990) and The Great Kandinsky (1995), then nearly 150 episodes of another TV series, Last of the Summer Wine, before his retirement in 2007.
