Long-faced, wide-eyed, brown-haired leading character actress who had a distinguished stage career while making more films than one might expect. Although brought up in Plaistow, East London, she made her stage debut in her native Derbyshire in 1951. Quickly establishing a solid reputation, she frequently played roles older than her real age, quite often as nurses or administrators. She made her film debut in Passport to Shame (1958), but the highest-profile role of her younger years came as the treasonous Elizabeth Gee in Ring of Spies (1963). Other movies included Behind the Mask (1958), Let's Get Married (1960, Highway to Battle (1961), The Whisperers (1966), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), A Touch of Love (1969), A Clockwork Orange (1971), The Legacy (1978), The Wars (1983), Mr Love (1985), Prick Up Your Ears (1987), The King's Whore (1990), Mrs Dalloway (1997), Until Death (2002), Bright Young Things (2003), The Thief Lord (2006) and Mother's Milk (2011), her last.
