Olga Lowe

Actress/singer/comedienne

Born - 14 September 1919, Durban, South Africa
Died - 2 September 2013

Rather stern-looking, dark-haired actress with quizzical eyebrows. In Britain from 1935, she later travelled to work in Brazil, America, France and South Africa before returning to Britain in post-war years. On stage she proved a formidable 'straightwoman' to comedians, and made her film debut in Trottie True (1949). Subsequent films included State Secret (1950), Hotel Sahara (1951), So Little Time (1952), Oh...Rosalinda!! (1955), then much TV and stage work before Where Eagles Dare (1968), Carry On Abroad (1972), Steptoe and Son Ride Again (1973), The Riddle of the Sands (1979), Nijinsky (1980) and Cous-Cous (1996), her last. With fellow South African Sidney James on stage when he collapsed and died in 1976, she herself died a few days short of her 94th birthday. She married three times, latterly to actor Keith Morris, who survives her.
