Swarthily good-looking, thickly black-haired actor, raised in America, but best-known for his leading roles in Italian westerns and adventure films. He returned to America in the late 1970s. The son of an army general who committed suicide after the overthrow of the Cuban dictatorship in 1945, he studied Method acting alongside Marilyn Monroe at the Actors' Studio, but went to Italy to break into movies: The Big Night (1959), Bell' Antonio (1960), Boccaccio 70 (1962), The Shortest Day (1963), Time of Indifference (1963), The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965), The Big Gundown (1966), The Violent Four (1967), A Fine Pair (1968), Companeros (1970), The Last Movie (1971), Sonny and Jed (1972), Almost Human (1974), Sex With a Smile (1976), Cop in Blue Jeans (1976), Son of the Sheik (1977), Winter Kills (1979), Monsignor (1982), King David (1985), Salome (1986), Cat Chaser (1989), Havana (1990), JFK (1991), The Cowboy Way (1994), Fools Rush In (1997), The Yards (2000), Traffic (2000), Washington Heights (2002), The Lost City (2005) and Fugly! (2014), his last. He died following a stroke.
