Affable English screenwriter, best known for writing the first six Carry On films. Later he worked in America where he died. He had begun by writing co-feature thrillers for the British cinema of the 1950s: Breakaway (1955), Passport to Treason (1956), Mailbag Robbery (1957) and Death Over My Shoulder (1958). Then comedy took over: Carry On Sergeant (1958), Carry On Nurse (1959), Please Turn Over (1959), Carry On Teacher (1959), Carry On Constable (1961), Carry On Regardless (1961), Twice Round the Daffodils (1962), Carry On Cruising (1962), Nurse on Wheels (1963) and Mister Ten Per Cent (1967). In America, he wrote mainly for TV, his few films including The Karate Killers (1967), How to Steal the World (1968), Hot Resort (1985) and A Monkey's Tale (1999), his last.
