Actor

Born - 31 July 1947, Thornaby-on-Tees, North Yorkshire, UK
Died - 28 March 2013

Portly British actor with curly sandy hair. An unmistakeable figure, he was a great Shakespearian clown in his younger days, but his later film, theatre and TV careers were defined by just a few roles: the lecherous uncle in Withnail and I (1986), the progressive teacher in the film (2006) and stage versions of The History Boys, sleuthing chef Henry Crabbe in the popular TV series Pie in the Sky and horrid Uncle Vernon Dursley in the Harry Potter films. Other movie credits included It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet (1976), Superman II (1980), Chariots of Fire (1981), Gandhi (1982), Gorky Park (1983), A Private Function (1984), Shanghai Surprise (1986), King Ralph (1991), Guarding Tess (1994), Funny Bones (1995), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Stage Beauty (2004), Venus (2006), Bedtime Stories (2008), Hugo (2011) and Private Peaceful (2012), his last. Born to deaf mute parents, he was an expert at sign language. Married to actress Heather Gibson for 33 years, he died from complications following heart surgery.
