Bob Godfrey

Animator

Born - 27 January 1921, West Maitland, New South Wales, Australia
Died - 21 February 2013

Bearded Australian-born animator specialising in 'cut-out' animation, noted for irreverent, often sex-oriented short cartoons, but also the children's TV series Roobarb (and Custard) and Henry's Cat. Born Roland Godfrey, he was in Britain from an early age, joining the newly-formed GB Animation Unit, allied to Rank, in post-war years, but later branching out on his own, soon attracting recognition (and sometimes notoriety) with such subjects as Polygamous Polonius (1960), The Rise and Fall of Emily Sprod (1962), Alf, Bill & Fred (1964), Rope Trick (1967), Henry 9 'til 5 (1970) and Kama Sutra Rides Again (1972). In 1975, he deservedly won an Academy Award for his brilliant 30-minute film GREAT! Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Later work included Dream Doll (1975), Instant Sex (1980), Revolution (1989) and Kevin Saves the World (1996), his last piece of animation for the cinema.
