Baby-faced character actor of African/Argentinian/Dominican descent, born John DeCoste. The world's first black news anchorman, he turned to acting in his late twenties, at first on TV, with films a few years later: Parrish (1961), Attraction (1969), Company of Killers (1970), Brother on the Run (1972), Benji (1974), Abby (1974), Foxy Brown (1974), Battlestar Galactica (1978), Hamilton (1998), Galacticon (2003) and Hamilton: In the Interest of the Nation (2012), his last. Three times married, he was also familiar as Sgt Joe Broadhurst in TV's long-running McCloud series.
