Thick-set, black-haired, aggressively good-looking Australian actor, in the UK from 1950 and often cast in films as a policeman, although his two best-known roles were outside the medium as Mitch in two seasons of radio's Journey into Space and as Simon Russell in TV's Crossroads. After a debut in his native Australia in Harvest Gold (1945), he claimed any number of roles in Britain's post-war movie industry: Women of Twilight (1951), The Cruel Sea (1952), The Intruder (1953), Front Page Story (1954), Malaga (1954), A Kid for Two Farthings (1955), Child in the House (1956), The Shiralee (1957), Smiley Gets a Gun (1958), Escort for Hire (1960), Pit of Darkness (1961), Fate Takes a Hand (1962), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), The Devil-Ship Pirates (1964), A Hard Day's Night (1964), A Run on Gold (1969) and Wuthering Heights (1970), his last. In latter times, he concentrated on careers as a cook and writer, adapting novels for TV and writing plays.
