One of the few recognisable American character actresses of more recent times, this diminutive dynamo of slightly horsey handsomeness, an expert at one-line put-downs, was the winner of three primetime Emmys and seven times nominated for a Tony for her stage work. In between, she fitted in a few films: Up the Down Staircase (1967), The Tiger Makes Out (1967), The Hospital (1971), Two People (1973), Fedora (1978), Starting Over (1979), Outland (1981), Romantic Comedy (1983), Independence Day (1983), Bright Lights, Big City (1988), See You in the Morning (1989), Misery (1990), Doc Hollywood (1991), Raising Cain (1992), It All Came True (1998), Landfall (2001), Highway (2002), The Mist (2007), Julie & Julia (2008), Dolphin Tale (2011) and And So It Goes (2014), her last. Her husband Tom died in 1991: they had six children.
