Genial, long-faced, brown-haired British actor (occasionally billed as Longden) who could play the lead in minor dramas or supporting roles in comedy. He was in several of the earlier 'Carry On' films, and took the title role of a daredevil pilot in the TV series Garry Halliday, which ran from 1959 to 1962. He had made his film debut in Italy, supporting Odile Versois in Francesca da Rimini (1950), but quickly settled into British films: Appointment with Venus (1951), Angels One Five (1951), Appointment in London (1952), Forbidden Cargo (1954), The Woman for Joe (1955), The Man Who Never Was (1956), Doctor at Large (1957), The Silent Enemy (1958), Carry On Sergeant (1958), Ben-Hur (1959), .Carry On Constable (1960), On the Fiddle (1961), Clash by Night (1963) and The Return of Mr Moto (1965). Later appearances, often as veteran officers, included The Wild Geese (1978), The Sea Wolves (1980) and Letters from the East (1996), his last. The first of his two marriages was to actress Barbara Jefford.
