French director noted for his Gallic thrillers starring some of the country's top actors. After film school studies, he progressed quickly to assistant director with Costa-Gavras on the 1970 film The Confession. His first feature film as director, France Inc (1973), was not successful, but the next, Police Python 357 (1976) established his reputation. Other hits followed, notably Serie Noire (1979), the historical epic Fort Saganne (1984), Le Mome (1986), Tous les Matins du Monde (1991), Le Nouveau Monde (1995), Le Cousin (1997), Le Prince du Pacifique (2000), Le Deuxieme Souffle (2007) and Crime d'Amour (2010), his last. Corneau, who was partnered with writer/director Nadine Trintignant, died from cancer.
