Rugged-looking Scottish actor with light-brown, curly hair. Born in Scotland, but raised in Canada, he returned to the UK as a young man and began a theatrical career that took in roles both as an actor and behind the scenes, while squeezing in a few films as well. After a movie debut as an attendant in A Midsummer Night 's Dream (1968), he made The Desperados (1969), Figures in a Landscape (1970), Welcome to the Club (1971), The Adventures of Barry Mackenzie (1972), Diamonds on Wheels (1974), The Spiral Staircase (1975), Force Ten from Navarone (1978), Dirty Money (1979), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), The Dogs of War (1980), Reds (1981), Ragtime (1981), Superman III (1983), Lassiter (1984), King David (1985), Eat the Rich (1987) and Whoops Apocalypse (1988). In his later years, he became best known as Saffy's gay father in TV's long-running Absolutely Fabulous series. Married with three children, he died from cancer.
