Solidly built English actor with large, open face and fair, curly hair, often in light drama. All of his most notable achievements were on TV (a medium which he had entered in the late 1950s), including Dennis Potter's classic creation Nigel Barton and, latterly, Stephen Tompkinson's father in the long-running crime series DCI Banks. Film appearances include those in The Haunted Man (1966), Baby Love (1968), The Man Who Had Power Over Women (1970), S.W.A.L.K./Melody (1971), Nothing But the Night (1973), The Land That Time Forgot (1974), At the Earth's Core (1976), Voyage of the Damned (1976), God's Outlaw (1986), La Passione (1996), Police 2020 (1996), the shorts In Memoriam (2002) and Last Tango in Croydon (2010), and the feature In Love with Alma Cogan (2012), his last. Survived by stage designer Mary Pickard, his wife of almost 60 years.
