Baby-faced, husky-voiced star with cropped blonde hair and challneging blue-eyed gaze, often in bold or outspoken roles. Films seldom did her versatile and edgily offbeat talents justice and she frequently found more rewarding work in the theatre. Born Susannah Yolande Fletcher, she was at the peak of her popularity in the 1960s, debuting in There Was a Crooked Man (1960), but first really attracting attention in Tunes of Glory later the same year. Subsequent films included The Greengage Summer (1961), Tom Jones (1963), Kaleidoscope (1966), A Man for All Seasons (1966), The Killing of Sister George (1968), an Oscar nomination for They Shoot Horses, Don't They?(1969), Lock Up Your Daughters!(1969), Images (1972), Gold (1974), Conduct Unbecoming (1975), Superman (1978), The Awakening (1980), Loophole (1981), A Christmas Carol (1984), A Summer Story (1988), A Handful of Time (1989), Loop (1997), Visitors (2003), The Gigolos (2006) and The Calling (2009), her last. She died after a long battle with bone marrow cancer.
