Andrew Sachs

Small, slightly-built character actor immortalised as the flapping Spanish waiter Manuel in the Fawlty Towers TV series. Born Andreas Sachs, his parents escaped from Nazi Germany in the early 1930s. Their son began acting as a teenager, appearing as schoolboys in Hue and Cry (1947) and Nicholas Nickleby (1947). Later film credits, often in comedy, include The Night We Dropped a Clanger (1959), Nothing Barred (1961), a voice in Asterix the Gaul (1967), Hitler: The Last Ten Days (1973), Frightmare (1974), Are You Being Served? (1977), Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978), History of the World: Part I (1981), Consuming Passions (1988), The Mystery of Edwin Drood (1993), Taxandria (1994), the short Dead Clean (1998), Nowhere in Africa (2001), Quartet (2012), Run for Your Wife (2012), Breaking the Bank (2014) and Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016), his last. Also famous for narrating children's audio books, and married to actress/writer Melody Lang, he died from vascular dementia.
