Bob Hoskins

Actor

Born - 26 October 1942, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, UK
Died - 29 April 2014

Short, stocky, balding, bulldog-like, gruff-voiced British actor, mainly in aggressive roles, but a versatile actor capable of playing both rough diamonds and gentler roles. Had he broken through to stardom earlier, Hoskins, who could do a decent American accent, would have been ideal casting as Dashiell Hammett's famous 'Continental Op'. As it was, after tough earlier times, he burst into the public eye as the vicious gangster of The Long Good Friday (1979) and never looked back. Many other film appearances included those in Up the Front (1972), The National Health (1973), Royal Flash (1975), Zulu Dawn (1979), The Honorary Consul (1983), The Cotton Club (1984), Brazil (1985), Oscar-nominated in Mona Lisa (1986), Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), Mermaids (1990), Super Mario Bros (1993), The Secret Agent (1996), Felicia's Journey (1999), Last Orders (2001), The Sleeping Dictionary (2003), Mrs Henderson Presents (2005), Hollywoodland (2006), Sparkle (2007), A Christmas Carol (2009), Made in Dagenham (2010) and Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), his last. He also directed The Raggedy Rawney (1988) and Rainbow (1995). Plagued with Parkinson's Disease in his latter years, he died from pneumonia.
