Stocky, hollow-cheeked, bushy-haired, black-browed English character star. Although briefly in leading movie roles in the early 1970s, he always expressed a preference for the theatre, where he began his career in local rep in the early 1950s. After a children's film, The Twopenny Diamond (1956), which was shown on TV, he established his acting reputation at the Royal Court theatre in London, before embarking on a busy film career in between theatrical assignments: The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner (1962), Life for Ruth (1962), The Informers (1963), The Comedy Man (1963), Hot Enough for June (1964), A Study in Terror (1965), an Oscar nomination as Iago in Othello (1965), The Jokers (1966), Robbery (1967), The Molly Maguires (1968), Cromwell (1970), Assault (1970), Gumshoe (1971), Sitting Target (1972), The Three Musketeers - The Queen's Diamonds (1973), The Four Musketeers - The Revenge of Milady (1974), The Wild Geese (1978), Murder by Decree (1979), The Ploughman's Lunch (1983), LifeForce (1985), The Return of the Musketeers (1989), King of the Wind (1990), Sparrow (1993), Stiff Upper Lips (1996), Dreaming of Joseph Lees (1998), The Martins (2001), The Pianist (2002), Lighthouse Hill (2004), The Waiting Room (2007), his last, and others.
