Chunky, jut-jawed, square-built, light-haired Australian actor, who came to Hollywood 'in my too-tight tweeds' in 1954 and gradually established himself as a leading man of warmth and charm, in star roles from 1959 to 1970. He had made his debut in Australia in The Sturt Expedition/Inland With Sturt (1951), following it with King of the Coral Sea (1953) and Long John Silver (1954). In America, he was seen in The Virgin Queen (1955), Hell on Frisco Bay (1955), Giant (1956), Raintree County (1957), Separate Tables (1958), Ask Any Girl (1959), The Time Machine (1960), Seven Seas to Calais (1962), Sunday in New York (1963), The Birds (1963), Young Cassidy (1964), Thirty-Six Hours (1964), Do Not Disturb (1965), The Glass Bottom Boat (1966), Hotel (1966) and Chuka (1967), before varying his career between America and Australia: Nobody Runs Forever (1968), The Man Who Had Power Over Women (1970), Powderkeg (1971), The Train Robbers (1973), The Picture Show Man (1977), On the Run (1982), Mask of Murder (1988), Open Season (1994), Welcome to Woop Woop (1997), Kaw (2007) and Inglourious Basterds (2009), his last. He died from a heart attack.
