Nosher Powell

Stuntman/actor

Born - 15 August 1928, Camberwell, London, UK
Died - 20 April 2013

Pugnacious, balding stuntman and small-part player who began doing stunts in films while still building up a flourishing boxing career. When that was over, he concentrated on his work as a stunt co-ordinator in films, playing many small parts, sometimes as a boxer, along the way. His first stunt assignment came as a teenager in Henry V (1944). Hundreds of other movies followed, though he first appeared before the cameras in Oliver Twist (1948). Born George Frederick Powell, he was sometimes billed as Fred Powell in the scores of films that followed, among them There is Another Sun (1951), Emergency Call (1952), Cosh Boy (1953) and Demetrius and the Gladiators (1954). With his boxing days over, he concentrated on his film work, playing dozens of aggressive characters, some dramatic, some comic: The Road to Hong Kong (1961), Call Me Bwana (1963), A Shot in the Dark (1964), She (1965), Circus of Fear (1966), Oliver! (1968), On the Buses (1971), The Mackintosh Man (1973), Brannigan (1975), The Stick-Up (1977), Victor Victoria (1982), Krull (1983), Willow (1988), Legionnnaire (1998) and Shiner (2000), his last. Powell, whose two sons and brother Dinny were all stuntmen, died in his sleep.
