Tall, feisty, tough-looking actress with a sleek figure and challenging gaze, often seen in films by French 'nouvelle vague' directors, notably those of Claude Chabrol. A prolific star, she made well over 150 films following her debut in Francois Truffaut's short Les Mistons (1957). Later work includes Bal de Nuit (1958), Web of Passion (1959), Les Bonnes Femmes (1960), The Sleeping Car Murders (1965), Le Voleur (1966), Catch Me a Spy (1971), Une Belle Fille comme Moi (1972), The Mother and the Whore (1973), Tendre Dracula (1974), Violette Noziere (1977), Dog Day (1984), Masques (1986), Babette's Feast (1987), Boom Boom (1990), Rien sur Robert (1998), Les Petites Couleurs (2002), I Do (2006), Broken English (2007), Bazar (2009), Paulette (2012) and Les Vacances du Petit Nicolas (2014), her last. Married and divorced from actor Gerard Blain (1930-2000), the first of her two husbands, she died from heart problems.
