Patrick Macnee

Actor

Born - 6 February 1922, Paddington, London, England
Died - 25 June 2015

Genial, round-faced, twinkling-eyed, ever-smiling English actor with dark wavy hair whose fame and fortune arrived with the role of the bowler-hatted agent John Steed in TV's The Avengers, as likely to go into battle with his umbrella as any other weapon. Born Daniel Patrick Macnee, his early film career had been patchy, often in extra work: Pygmalion (1938), Sailors Three (1940), Major Barbara (1941), The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), Hamlet (1948), The Fatal Night (1948, a first featured role), The Small Back Room (1949), The Elusive Pimpernel (1950), Scrooge (1951), Three Cases of Murder (1954), The Battle of the River Plate (1956) and Les Girls (1957). After The Avengers, he made Mister Jerico (1969), Incense for the Damned (1970), King Solomon's Treasure (1979), The Howling (1981), Young Doctors in Love (1982), This is Spinal Tap (1984), A View to a Kill (1985), Waxwork (1988), Masque of the Red Death (1989), Eye of the Widow (1991), a voice in The Avengers (1998) and The Low Budget Time Machine (2003), his last. The second of his three wives was actress Katherine Woodville.
