Cherubic, bearded, distinguished man of the English theatre, who founded the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1960 (he stayed as artistic director for nine years) and thereafter took over direction of the National Theatre., where he staged more than 300 plays over a 16-year period. In the 1960s and 1970s, he also directed a few films: A Midsummer Night's Dream (1968), Work is a Four-Letter Word (1968), Three into Two Won't Go (1969), Perfect Friday (1970), The Homecoming (1973) and Akenfield (1974). Much later, he made the thriller Never Talk to Strangers (1995), his last work for the cinema. Four times married, the first to actress/dancer Leslie Caron, he died from pneumonia. The actress Rebecca Hall is his daughter.
