Dark-haired French-Canadian actress with classic cheekbones and smily features. Born Marie Monique Emond, she was a stage actress who made no movies until her thirties, but later won a Cannes Palm d'Or for her performance in J A Martin, Photographer (1977). Much in demand by top French and Canadian directors throughout her long career, she was also seen in more than 50 further films, including A Tout Prendre (1963), Le Festin des Morts (1965), Waiting for Caroline (1969), Mon Oncle Antoine (1971), Les Vautours (1975), Quintet (1979), La Cuisine Rouge (1980), Une Journee en Taxi (1982), The Blood of Others (1984), Qui a Tire sur nos Histoires d'Amour (1986), In the Belly of the Dragon (1989), Naked Lunch (1991), The Feast of Kings (1994), Conquest (1998), The Red Violin (1998), When Justice Fails (1999), Geraldine's Fortune (2004), La Brunante (2007), Master Key (2009), The Girl in the White Coat (2011), Marche Avec Moi (2015) and C'est le Coeur Qui Meurt en Dernier (2017), her last. A pioneer of Quebecois cinema, she died from cancer.
