Joe Melia

Actor

Born - 23 January 1935, Islington, London, UK
Died - 20 October 2012

Slightly-built, sharp-faced, scruffy-looking character actor of Italian extraction with dark, tousled hair, often in comedy roles. Born Giovanni Melia in the heart of London, but brought up in Leicester, he was prominent in revue at Cambridge University and was soon in film roles: Too Many Crooks (1958), Follow a Star (1959), The Intelligence Men (1964), Four in the Morning (1965), Modesty Blaise (1966), Oh! What a Lovely War (1969), Anthony and Cleopatra (1972), The Odd Job (1978), The Wildcats of St Trinian's (1980), Privates on Parade (1983) and Pop Pirates (1984), his last, although he continued acting on TV and the theatre. It was the stage that brought him his greatest successes, most notably the male lead in the original production of A Day in the Death of Joe Egg in 1967.
