Tim Conway

Comedian/actor

Born - 15 December 1933, Los Angeles, California, USA
Died - 14 May 2019

Fuzzy, chubby, sawn-off, balding, bumbling American comedian with twangy voice, riotously successful on TV from the late 1950s, notably in the series McHale's Navy - the spin-off film of the same title in 1964 provided him with his movie debut - and The Carol Burnett Show. Born Thomas Conway, he changed his name slightly to avoid confusion with the suave thriller star and was in TV comedy after nightclub experience by the early 1960s. Subsequent films included McHale's Navy Joins the Air Force (1965) and Star Spangled Salesman (1968), before the Disney Studio took him under its wing for eight years and teamed him mainly with goggle-eyed fellow-comedian Don Knotts in a series of knockabout romps: The World's Greatest Athlete (1973), The Apple Dumpling Gang (1975), Gus (1976), The Shaggy D.A. (1976), The Billion Dollar Hobo (1977), They Went That-a-Way and That-a-Way (1978), The Apple Dumping Gang Rides Again (1979) and The Private Eyes (1980). Later he appeared in Cannonball Run II (1984), The Longshot (1986), Dear God (1996), Air Bud: Golden Receiver (1998), The View from the Swing (2000), Huntin' Buddies (2008), Chip & Bernie's Zomance (2015) and Chip & Bernie Save Christmas With Dorf (2016), his last. Twice married, he had six children. Suffering from dementia in his last years, he died following brain surgery.
