Languid-looking, lazy-lidded, blond-haired, spare British actor who looked born to play roles in white suits and neckerchiefs. He coached children in acting workshops before embarking on his own acting career, which took off with key roles in The Killing Fields (1984) and A Room With a View (1985). Later he was often cast in cruel roles and controversial material. He sparked a nationwide hunt after vanishing while hiking in America, his remains not being found for five months.
