Rosalind Knight

Actress

Born - 3 December 1933, Marylebone, London, England

Brown-haired English character actress of sharp-faced prettiness, gimlet gaze and deep brown eyes, the daughter of actor Esmond Knight, and often seen in unsympathetic, acerbic roles, although also a dab hand at daffy or predatory comedy parts. A regular on British screens for 60 years, she had made a fleeting appearance in Wild at Heart/Gone to Earth (1950), before regular film work began a few years later: Richard III (1955), Fortune is a Woman/She Played with Fire (1957), Carry On Nurse (1959), Carry On Teacher (1959), The Pure Hell of St Trinian's (1960), The Kitchen (1961), Tom Jones (1963), Diamonds for Breakfast (1968), Start the Revolution Without Me (1969), Mister Quilp (1974), It Could Happen to You (1976), The Lady Vanishes (1979), The Wildcats of St Trinian's (1980), Enemies of the State (1983), Prick Up Your Ears (1987), Afraid of the Dark (1991), Solitaire for 2 (1994), Il Mio West/Gunslinger's Revenge (1998), About a Boy (2002), Cheeky (2003), Sunshine (2009), Demons Never Die (2011) and The Lady in the Van (2015), her last, although she continued making the TV series Friday Night Dinner up to this year. She married director Michael Elliott, but he died in 1984 at 52. She died from pancreatic cancer.
