His father was Arthur Howard, his uncle Leslie Howard and his great-aunt Fay Compton, all well-known thespians. Mainly a stage star, equally at home in comedy and tragedy, the unassuming actor also made a number of films, among them Victim (1961), The V.I.P.s (1963), The Americanization of Emily (1964), The Heroes of Telemark (1965), Work is a 4-Letter Word (1968), Oxford Blues (1984), The Return of the Musketeers (1989), The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (1989), The Secret Rapture (1993) and David Copperfield (2000). He was also the voice of the Ring in two of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. He was a long-term sufferer from type 1 diabetes, a disease which eventually led to him losing a leg.
