Born - 9 December 1915, Newcastle, Tyne and Wear (then Northumberland), England
Died - 10 May 2012

Diminutive, dynamic English stage actress with distinctive dark auburn hair, raised in County Mayo, Ireland. Best remembered now for her role as the voracious Jenny Jones in Tom Jones (1963), which won her the first of two Oscar nominations, she made her London stage debut in 1935 and was also involved in early TV dramas of the late 1930s. Her film debut came in UK creeper Spellbound/The Spell of Amy Nugent (1940), but movie audiences were rarely treated to her talents thereafter: One of Our Aircraft is Missing (1942), Othello (1965, her second Academy Award nomination), Prudence and the Pill (1968), a TV movie version of Les Miserables (1978) and A Different Kind of Love (1985), her last. Her son is the actor Crispin Redman, her niece the actress Amanda Redman. She died from pneumonia.
