Tall, long-faced, thickly dark-haired Canadian producer, director and, occasionally, writer and actor who also founded the Seattle Film Festival. He began producing films in the late 1980s, often in partnership with UK director Ken Russell, turning director himself in the mid 1990s: The Whole Wide World (1995), The Velocity of Gary (1998), Passionaada (2002), Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont (2005) and Jolene (2008). After a break for theatre work, he made the short films Hate from a Distance (2014) and A Most Peculiar Man (2015) and was working on several movie feature projects, including Life Briefly (2016) at the time of his early death.
