Dark-haired, wide-mouthed, elegant, intense-looking American actress, a distinguished stage performer who found time for too few films. After making an early TV movie, Our Sister Emily in 1952, she made an occasional foray into the cinema, usually in supporting roles: The James Brothers (1957), The Light in the Forest (1958), The Big Fisherman (1959), Crime and Punishment USA (1960), The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965) and Fingers (1978). Later, now with a mane of shaggy grey hair, she made Zits (1988), The Gun in Betty Lou's Handbag (1992), Tom and Huck (1995), Home Alone 3 (1997), The Haunting (1999), Duets (2000), Town & Country (2001), Hollywood Ending (2002), Mona Lisa Smile (2003), Plainsong (2004), August Rush (2007), Leatherheads (2008), The Extra Man (2010) and Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life (2011), her last. Her second husband, the playwright Garson Kanin, died in 1999.
