Light-haired, slightly-built, intense American actor with prominent lips and high forehead, who defied parental opposition to slowly gain a foothold in the acting world. As he approached his forties he began to get leading roles, and won an Oscar nomination opposite Bette Midler in The Rose (1979). A favourite of director Francis Ford Coppola, he featured in several of Coppola's most interesting films, later regressing to character roles and many TV movies: Viet Rock (1966), The Filthy Five (1967), Futz (1969), When the Legends Die (1972), The Don is Dead (1973), The Conversation (1974), Permission to Kill (1975), The Missouri Breaks (1976), It Lives Again! (1977), Apocalypse Now (1979), One from the Heart (1981), Hammett (1982), Valley Girl (1983), The Stone Boy (1984), Valentino Returns (1986), Tucker:The Man and His Dream (1988), Music Box (1989), The Two Jakes (1990), Twin Sisters (1991), Rain Without Thunder (1992), Falling Down (1993), Lassie (1994), One Night Stand (1995), Black Thunder (1996), The End of Violence (1997), Implicated (1998), Militia (2000), The House Next Door (2002), The Quality of Light (2004) and All the King's Men (2006), his last. Beset by various health problems in later years; both his marriages (the second to actress Marilu Henner) ended in divorce.
