Dark, bequiffed English actor of whippy build and earnest manner, the son of a crime novelist. After a few small roles in the early years of his film career, he became perhaps the last steadily-employed star of British 'B' features from 1957 to 1966, playing featured roles in bigger projects, and also starring in a popular TV series, William Tell. After a debut in the medium-length film The Gentlemen Go By (1948), he was seen in Lilli Marlene (1950), It Started in Paradise (1952), Johnny on the Spot (1954), Triple Blackmail (1955), No Road Back (1956), Strangers' Meeting (1957), The White Trap (1959), Witness in the Dark (1959), Circus of Horrors (1960), Sons and Lovers (1960), The Shadow of the Cat (1961), Dead Man's Evidence (1962), Impact (1963), Stopover Forever (1964), Dateline Diamonds (1965), Who Killed the Cat? (1966), The Ghost of Monk's Island (1967), his last, and others. He continued to act in TV series until back, hip and knee problems put an end to his career in the early 1990s. His first wife was actress Jean Muir. His second wife survives him.
