Lean, lithe, tall, dark-haired American dancer who, beginning his show business career at 14, was a teenage hepcat in Universal jivin' musicals of the 1940s before progressing later to become a part of some of Hollywood's most vibrant and splashiest musicals. Joining the Jivin' Jacks and Jills, he appeared with them in Wake Up and Dream (1941), Private Buckaroo, She's My Lovely and Give Out, Sisters! (all 1942) and Mister Big, It Comes Up Love and Always a Bridesmaid (all 1943). He was in Ziegfeld Follies (1945) and Good News (1947), before returning to Hollywood after stage success: Kiss Me, Kate! (1953), Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954), My Sister Eileen (1955), The Second Greatest Sex (1955), World in My Corner (1956), Walk the Proud Land (1956), Invitation to the Dance (1956) and Merry Andrew (1958), before returning to Broadway. Later films include Funny Girl (1968), Pennies from Heaven (1981) and Saturday the 14th Strikes Back (1988), his last. He died from heart failure.
