Bushily dark-haired, youthful-looking American 'second lead', now chiefly remembered for his role as Dr Zachary Smith in the long-running Lost in Space series on TV. Film parts included those in The Monkey's Uncle (1965), A Rage to Live (1965), The Love-Ins (1967), Play It Again, Sam (1972), The Death Squad (1974), Blue Sunshine (1977), Roller Boogie (1979), Strange Invaders (1983), A Reason to Live (1985), Lost in Space (1998), Overnight Sensation (2000), Supernatural (2010) and Lost in Space: The Epilogue (2015), his last. Born Charles Goddard, he died from pulmonary fibrosis. Actress Susan Anspach was the second of his three wives; he is survived by his third wife Helen and four children.
