John Wood

Actor

Born - 1 January 1930, Derbyshire, UK
Died - 6 August 2011

Lugubrious, long-faced, brown-haired English character star, often seen in his later years as dog-eared professors or decaying aristocrats. Despite extensive work in the theatre, this quintessentially eccentric English actor managed quite a few films as well. After a debut in Stolen Face (1952), his earlier work was in lighter vein: Idle on Parade (1959), Two-Way Stretch (1960), The Rebel (1961), Postman's Knock (1962) and The Mouse on the Moon (1963). Subsequent films included Just Like a Woman (1966), One More Time (1970), Nicholas and Alexandra (1971), Slaughterhouse-Five (1972), Somebody Killed Her Husband (1978), WarGames (1983), The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) and Lady Jane (1986). In the statelier roles of his later years, he made Orlando (1992), Shadowlands (1993), The Madness of King George (1994), Sabrina (1995), Jane Eyre (1996), Metroland (1997), The Gambler (1997), An Ideal Husband (1999), Chocolat (2000), The Body (2001), Imagining Argentina (2003) and The White Countess (2005), his last. He died in his sleep.
