Dark, diminutive, dynamic American filmmaker. at or near his peak for 25 years from 1957 to 1982, and four times nominated for an Academy Award. He was finally given an honorary Oscar in 2005. Lumet made an auspicious start to his Hollywood directing career with the much-lauded screen version of a TV success, 12 Angry Men (1957). The best of his subsequent work includes Stage Struck (1958), A View from the Bridge (1961), The Pawnbroker (1965), The Hill (1965), The Deadly Affair (1966), The Anderson Tapes (1971), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), Dog Day Afternoon (1975), Network (1976), Equus (1977), The Wiz (1978), Deathtrap (1981) and The Verdict (1982). Although never as successful as in those years, he continued making movies until the last one, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, appeared in 2007. Four times married, the first to actress Rita Gam, he died from lymphoma.
