Slender, glacial Italian blonde actress and singer who somewhat unexpectedly became an international name in her late twenties after a decade in films. Born Virna Pieralisi, and spotted as a teenager, she began in light musicals, then in period pieces which gradually attracted Hollywood attention: The Steel Rope (1953), The Doll That Took the Town (1955), Il Conte di Materia (1957), Il Mondo dei Miracoli (1959), Duel of the Titans/Romulus and Remus (1961), The Black Tulip (1962), Casanova 70 (1963), How to Murder Your Wife (1964), Kiss the Other Sheik (1965), Assault on a Queen (1966), Not With My Wife, You Don't! (1966), Arabella (1967), Tenderly/The Girl Who Couldn't Say No (1968), The Christmas Tree (1969), The Secret of Santa Vittoria (1969), If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium (1969), The Statue (1971), Bluebeard (1972), The Serpent (1973), White Fang (1974), Beyond Good and Evil (1977), Miss Right (1979) and No Place Like Home (1987). After several years away, she made a sensational comeback by winning the best actress award at Cannes for La Reine Margot (1994). Her last film was Il Giorno piu Bella della mia Vita in 2002. She was married for 53 years; her husband died in 2013.
