Lina Romay

Singer-actress

Born - 16 January 1919, New York City, USA
Died - 17 December 2010

Athletic-looking, peppy, bow-lipped brunette, born Elena Romay to a Mexican diplomat living in New York. Blessed with a liquid singing voice, she was a vocalist with the Xavier Cugat Orchestra at 20 and made her screen debut with them in You Were Never Lovelier (1942). Her screen image was set when she sang She's a Bombshell from Brooklyn in Stage Door Canteen (1943). Subsequent films, almost always in exotic roles, and often involving a song or two, included Tropicana (1943), Week-End at the Waldorf (1944), Adventure (1945), Love Laughs at Andy Hardy (1946), This Time for Keeps (1947), Embraceable You (1948), The Big Wheel (1949), The Lady Takes a Sailor (1950) and The Man behind the Gun (1953), her last. 1953 was also the year she married and effectively retired from show business.
