Richard Thorp

Actor

Born - 2 January 1932, Purley, Surrey, England
Died - 22 May 2013

Ingenuous-looking in his early career, this brown-haired British actor later put on weight and became famous as the boozing, womanising landlord in the UK TV soap Emmerdale. In his slimmer days, he was a hearthrob doctor for 10 years in another TV series, Emergency Ward 10. Movies were understandably sparse, although he began as early as 1948 with Melody in the Dark. Later film work includes Will Any Gentleman? (1953), The Dam Busters (1954), The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1956), The Good Companions (1957), The Last Train (1960), Mystery Submarine (1962), Lancelot and Guinevere (1962), Bitter Harvest (1963) and Suburban Wives (1972), his last before entrenchment in TV. Married and divorced three times, he suffered in later years from leukemia and heart problems.
