Smilingly-handsome, dark-haired, debonair French charmer, in films at 20. After working with the French Resistance during World War II, he was invited to Hollywood, which typecast him as the amorous continental, although he remained in international films for the rest of his career. After Le Corsaire and Felicie Nanteuil (both 1939), he made La Belle Aventure (1942), The Paradine Case (1947), Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948), Madame Bovary (1949), Anne of the Indies (1951), Three Coins in the Fountain (1954), The Swan (1955), Julie (1956), Dangerous Exile (1957), Gigi (1958), Can-Can (1960), The V.I.P.s (1963), Made in Paris (1965), To Commit a Murder (1967), The Count of Monte Cristo (1974), Silver Bears (1977), Swamp Thing (1982), Octopussy (1983), Cover-Up (1984), The Return of Swamp Thing (1989) and Year of the Comet (1992). His wife of 68 years died in 2014.
