Billie Whitelaw

Actress

Born - 6 June 1932, Coventry, Warwickshire, England
Died - 21 December 2014

Tawny, tigerish British actress, often seen in intense or sexually aggressive roles. A radio actress in children's drama series as a girl (billed as 'B Whitelaw' and often playing boys' parts), she entered films in the early 1950s, but did not quite achieve the star status her talent demanded, being more successful on stage, where she proved something of a muse for playwright Samuel Beckett. After a movie debut as a waitress in the Fake (1953), she was seen in The Sleeping Tiger (1954), Room in the House (1955), Gideon's Day (1958), The Flesh and the Fiends (1960), Payroll (1961), The Comedy Man (1963), Charlie Bubbles (1967), Twisted Nerve (1968), Gumshoe (1969) and Frenzy (1972). Later, she played harridans and matriarchs: The Omen (1976), The Water Babies (1978), Slayground (1983), Shadey (1986), The Dressmaker (1988), The Krays (1990), Jane Eyre (1996), Quills (2000) and Hot Fuzz (2007), her last. The first of her two husbands was actor Peter Vaughan.
