Andrzej Wajda

Director

Born - 6 March 1926, Suwalki, Poland
Died - 9 October 2016

Distinguished, dynamic Polish director who vividly portrayed the plight of Poland and its people in the war and post-war years. His characters are trapped in prisons, cellars, sewers, anything that forms the end of the line after a bitter struggle. Or they are trapped by the system, like the elusive central character of Man of Iron and Man of Marble. He had made a short, The Bad Boy in 1950 but, after his first feature, A Generation (1954), there was little doubt that a major new filmmaker had emerged. His body of work thereafter includes Kanal (1957), Ashes and Diamonds (1958), Innocent Sorcerers (1959), Samson (1961), The Siberian Lady Macbeth (1962), Ashes (1965), Gates to Paradise (1967), Everything for Sale (1968), Landscape After Battle (1970), The Wedding (1972), Land of Promise (1974), The Shadow Line (1976), Man of Marble (1977), The Conductor (1980), Man of Iron (1981), Danton (1982), Possessed (1988), Dr Korczak (1990), Nastazja (1994), Holy Week (1996), The Vengeance (2002), Katyn (2007), Tatarak (2009), and Walesa: Man of Hope (2013), his last. Four times married and given an honorary Academy Award in 2000, he was still planning another film at the time of his death from heart problems.
