Heavily-built, rumble-voiced British character star with receding fair hair, born Sidney Jocelyn Ackland, and a stage actor seldom seen in films until he hit 40. After that, he came into regular demand for star character roles, spreading his wings to make films in Europe and Hollywood, and winning awards for his leading role in 1987's White Mischief. Many other film appearances include those in Landfall (1949), Ghost Ship (1952), Next to No Time! (1958), In Search of the Castaways (1962), Rasputin the Mad Monk (1965), Crescendo (1969), Villain (1971), England Made Me (1972), The Black Windmill (1974), Royal Flash (1975), Silver Bears (1977), Saint Jack (1979), Rough Cut (1980), Lady Jane (1985), The Sicilian (1987), Lethal Weapon 3 (1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990), Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (1991), Champions/The Mighty Ducks (1992), Miracle on 34th Street (1994), Surviving Picasso (1996), My Giant (1998), The Mumbo Jumbo (2000), K-19: The Widowmaker (2002), Asylum (2004), These Foolish Things (2006), How About You (2007), Prisoners of the Sun (2013) and Decline of an Empire (2014), his last. His wife Rosemary died in 2002; they had seven children.
